As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10, marking the end of security updates, bug fixes, and technical support for one of the most widely used operating systems in the world. While some may view this as a distant deadline, cybercriminals have already circled the date. Why? Because every device still running Windows 10 after that day becomes low-hanging fruit, easy targets in a growing sea of unprotected systems.

Let’s break down what ‘NO SUPPORT’ really means and what exactly hackers will do with these outdated machines and why no one, not even your IT provider, will be able to protect you.

What No Support Really Means

Here’s the hard truth: no IT provider can properly protect or support a Windows 10 system after it reaches end-of-life.

    • No Security Tools Will Be Reliable: Antivirus, EDR, and other protection tools rely on OS-level compatibility. Vendors stop developing and supporting these tools once Microsoft stops supporting the OS.
    • No Vendor Support: If third-party apps break, you’re on your own. Software vendors will not troubleshoot or patch anything on an unsupported platform.
    • No Legal Coverage: Running unsupported systems may put your business out of compliance with insurance, legal, or industry regulations. In a breach, your insurer may deny the claim.
  • No Covered Support from your MSP: As much as they would love to help, most service plans do not cover any issues, incidents, or fallout from Windows 10 systems post-EOL, including security, performance, or compatibility problems. They simply cannot protect what Microsoft no longer maintains.

What Hackers Will Do with Windows 10 EOL Devices

  • Exploit Unpatched Vulnerabilities: Once Microsoft stops releasing updates, any vulnerabilities discovered afterward will remain permanently unpatched. Hackers actively scan for machines running outdated OS versions because they know these flaws exist and can be exploited with minimal effort. These attacks won’t be sophisticated; they’ll be automated and constant.
  • Launch Ransomware Campaigns: Windows 10 EOL systems are ideal launchpads for ransomware. With no security updates, they’re far easier to infect. Once inside, attackers encrypt business-critical files and demand a ransom, often shutting down operations for days or weeks. And if you think backups will save you, remember attackers often go after those, too.
  • Hijack Machines for Botnets and Malware: Hackers can use compromised Windows 10 systems to distribute malware, launch attacks on other networks, or send spam as part of a botnet. Your system might become a tool in someone else’s cybercrime operation without you even knowing it.
  • Steal Data and Credentials: Old machines are rich targets for data theft. Hackers can deploy keyloggers and info-stealers that harvest passwords, customer data, financial, and other sensitive information, putting your business, your clients, and your reputation at risk.

You Have Time – But Not Much

Three months may seem like a long time, but hardware backorders, licensing complications, and planning needs can quickly eat up that runway. The longer you wait, the harder (and more expensive) it becomes to do this the right way.

At Braver, we’re helping our clients stay ahead with:

  • System audits to identify machines that need to be replaced
  • Expert hardware and licensing recommendations
  • Seamless deployment and migration support
  • Guidance to ensure business continuity and security

Don’t Wait Until the Alarm Sounds

Hackers are counting on businesses to ignore the deadline. Let’s prove them wrong.
