CMMC is here.
Let’s get you ready.

CMMC Level 2 readiness and compliance support for New England businesses

The clock on CMMC is already running, and readiness is now a competitive advantage.

If your business handles federal contract information or Controlled Unclassified Information, certification is a condition of winning the work, not a box to check later.

We already know how to look after the businesses we serve. On CMMC, Braver Technology, a New Charter Partner, delivers and manages your IT and security services from the New Charter Trust Enclave, our secured operational environment built for compliance, working alongside Cyber74, who prepares your organization for its third-party assessment. Together we support businesses across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New England with readiness, gap identification, control implementation, documentation, and long-term compliance aligned with NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2.

What CMMC Actually Is

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, or CMMC, is how the Department of Defense confirms that the companies in its supply chain protect sensitive information. It replaces years of self-attestation with controls you can actually prove.

CMMC Level 2 is the tier focused on protecting Controlled Unclassified Information, commonly called CUI. It is assessed against the security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, the cybersecurity requirements for non-federal organizations that store, process, or transmit CUI.

The old honor system left gaps. CMMC ties cybersecurity directly to contract eligibility, so the requirement now carries real weight: without a valid status, you cannot be awarded the work.

Braver helps New England businesses prepare with a phased, practical, and audit-aware approach.

Who Needs CMMC — Including Businesses That Don’t Realize They Do

Southern New England sits on top of one of the country’s deepest defense ecosystems. The submarine and undersea cluster around Quonset Point and Newport, anchored by names like Electric Boat and Raytheon, pulls in a long supply chain of regional manufacturers and service firms. If your business touches any part of that work, CMMC likely reaches you.

CMMC can apply to organizations that work directly or indirectly with the Department of Defense. Businesses commonly in scope include:

  • Prime contractors
  • Subcontractors
  • Precision machining and fabrication
  • Undersea and maritime suppliers
  • Engineering consultants
  • Logistics providers
  • Software vendors
  • Facilities and site services

The part most businesses miss: scope follows the data you handle, not the industry you would put on a business card. A supplier that stores facility layouts, floor plans, or controlled project documents for a defense site can fall in scope. And obligations flow down the supply chain through subcontractor relationships, so the requirement reaches companies that never bid on a federal contract directly.

Why Action Is Needed Now

CMMC is no longer a future concern. The contractual requirement is in force, and readiness is what separates the businesses that can bid from the ones that cannot.

You cannot start once the solicitation is out:

  • There is no grace period at award. If you cannot show the required CMMC status for an opportunity, you are not eligible. There is no winning the work first and sorting compliance out afterward.
  • The assessor queue is the real holdup. Readiness takes months, and third-party assessor capacity is booked out. The businesses that prepare early keep their place in line.
  • Contract requirements are expanding across the defense supply chain.
  • Subcontractors may receive flowdown requirements from primes with limited notice.
  • Evidence collection, policy development, and control implementation all take time.

Braver Technology helps businesses take a structured approach now, so readiness work is not rushed later. Our role is to help you understand where you stand, what needs to change, and how to move forward with a practical plan.

CMMC Level 2 & NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2

CMMC Level 2 is designed for businesses that handle Controlled Unclassified Information. It is assessed against the security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2.

These requirements cover important cybersecurity areas such as access control, awareness and training, audit and accountability, configuration management, identification and authentication, incident response, risk assessment, security assessment, system and communications protection, and more.

What this means for your business:

  • You need to understand whether CUI exists in your environment.
  • You need to know which systems are in scope.
  • You need to assess your current alignment with NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2.
  • You need a plan to remediate gaps.
  • You need documentation and evidence to support assessment preparation.
  • You need ongoing compliance management, not a one-time project.

A Revision 3 of NIST SP 800-171 exists, but current CMMC assessments continue to reference Revision 2. Braver supports CMMC Level 2 readiness by implementing required controls and managing the technical work that sustains long-term compliance.

How Braver and Cyber74 Support CMMC Readiness

Most providers blur the line between preparing for an assessment and running the environment afterward. We keep it plain, with clear hands on every step. Braver Technology operates the New Charter Trust Enclave, the secured operational environment our team works from to deliver and manage your IT and security services.

What is the New Charter Trust Enclave? It is the secured, segmented operational environment our team works from to deliver and manage your IT and security services. The tools we use are agent-based and run on your own systems, so there is nothing for you to move or migrate. What matters to you is the discipline behind it: because we operate from an environment built to the control standards CMMC expects, the way your services are delivered helps keep you compliant instead of becoming a weak link in your supply chain.

Our coordinated support model:

  • Readiness assessment: Cyber74
  • Gap identification: Cyber74
  • Remediation planning: Shared
  • Control implementation: Braver Technology
  • Documentation and evidence: Cyber74
  • C3PAO assessment preparation: Shared
  • Ongoing compliance support: Braver Technology

In short: Cyber74 gets you ready and assessment-prepared. Braver delivers and supports the IT and security environment that keeps you compliant once you are. The certification itself is conducted by an accredited C3PAO. Braver and Cyber74 prepare you for it and support your environment; we do not issue or guarantee the certification.

One Coordinated Path, With Clear Hands on Every Step

CMMC readiness is not a single checklist. It is a phased process that runs from assessment and planning through technical remediation, documentation, evidence collection, and ongoing management.

Braver helps New England businesses move through this process with a structured methodology that supports long-term compliance without overpromising certification outcomes. Steps led by Cyber74 are noted, the rest are delivered by Braver, operating the New Charter Trust Enclave.

1. Readiness Assessment — Cyber74

Cyber74 establishes where you stand today against the Level 2 requirements and helps define the scope of your environment.

2. Gap Identification — Cyber74

Cyber74 pinpoints the specific controls, policies, and evidence that are missing or incomplete against NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2.

3. Remediation Planning — Shared

We turn gaps into a sequenced plan that balances compliance priorities against how your business actually runs day to day.

4. Control Implementation — Braver

Braver builds and configures the technical environment, hardening systems and putting the required safeguards into production: access management, endpoint protection, monitoring, configuration hardening, secure communications, and backup practices.

5. Documentation & Evidence — Cyber74

Cyber74 develops the System Security Plan, policies, Plan of Action and Milestones, and the evidence package an assessor will expect to review.

6. C3PAO Assessment Preparation — Shared

Braver and Cyber74 ready your team and environment for the third-party assessment, validating evidence and closing remaining gaps. The certification itself is conducted by an accredited C3PAO, not by us.

7. Ongoing Compliance Support — Braver

CMMC compliance is an ongoing effort. Braver runs, monitors, and maintains the environment through our certified help desk, so staying compliant becomes part of how you operate, not a scramble before every bid.

Important:

CMMC readiness is not only about tools. It also requires process, documentation, accountability, evidence, and continued management. Braver helps businesses build the operational discipline needed to sustain long-term compliance.

Why Braver Technology

CMMC is easier when the people guiding you already understand your business. Braver brings trusted local IT support together with the broader capabilities of New Charter and Cyber74. For New England businesses, that means a regional partner who knows your environment, your operations, and your need for practical guidance.

A relationship, not a transaction

We treat CMMC the way we treat everything else: as a partner who is in it with you, not a vendor handing off a report.

Local support, national reach

Braver supports businesses across Boston, Taunton, Providence, and the wider New England region, backed by the shared resources of New Charter.

IT and compliance under one roof

CMMC readiness requires both compliance knowledge and technical execution. The team that prepares the environment is the team that runs it, so nothing falls through the cracks between vendors.

Support for long-term compliance

CMMC is not a one-time project. It requires ongoing attention, updates, and accountability. Braver helps businesses maintain secure, compliant, and resilient environments through ongoing support, monitoring, remediation assistance, and a certified help desk.

Built for defense supply chain businesses

Manufacturers, engineering firms, technology providers, logistics partners, and subcontractors often face complex, layered compliance requirements. Braver helps you understand your obligations, then prepare with confidence.

Cyber74 handles readiness, gap identification, documentation, and assessment preparation. Braver delivers implementation and ongoing compliance management. Together, that creates a structured, accountable path toward CMMC readiness.

CMMC Readiness FAQ

What is CMMC Level 2?

Level 2 is the tier that applies to most businesses handling Controlled Unclassified Information. It is assessed against the security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 and, for many contracts, requires a third-party certification assessment.

How long does readiness take?

It depends on the size and current state of your environment, but readiness is usually measured in months, not weeks. Putting controls in place, producing documentation and evidence, and then scheduling an assessment all take time, which is why it pays to start before a solicitation appears.

What is CUI?

Controlled Unclassified Information is sensitive information the government requires you to safeguard under law or policy. Handling CUI is generally what moves a business into Level 2 territory.

What is NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2?

It is the publication that defines the security requirements CMMC Level 2 is currently assessed against. A Revision 3 exists, but current CMMC assessments continue to reference Revision 2.

Who actually grants the certification?

An accredited third-party assessment organization, known as a C3PAO, conducts the certification assessment. Braver and Cyber74 prepare you for it and support your environment; we do not issue or guarantee the certification itself.

We already have solid security. Isn’t that enough?

Good security is the foundation, but CMMC also requires documented evidence and assessment readiness. Plenty of capable businesses have the right controls in practice yet lack the documentation an assessor needs to see. Closing that gap is a big part of the work.
